Dirt, Sand, Soul Sand, and Red Sand can be dug up over and over to get items, which you can use in custom recipes.
Use your Crafting Book in the crafting interface to see what you can craft! You can also set up fishing ponds in the various biomes across the map to fish up more items!
Your end-goal is to get to the Nether by making a Nether Portal, and unlock as much as you can, like saplings and water. After that, set whatever goals you want!
This can be played Singleplayer, but it's HIGHLY recommended that you play with more people in Multiplayer. This map is way more fun when everyone is fighting each other. Whoever gets to the Nether first wins!
(here's a tip. Use a cauldron to get water from rain)
